Marion Grant was an advocate for women's rights and for social welfare in the city of Hartford, Connecticut. Those two interests are illustrated in a series of essays, articles and speeches she made between 1964-1980, and a report of the Hartford Human Services study, 1983. Her husband Ellsworth Grant is represented by a scrapbook documenting his political career in West Hartford on the council and as mayor, 1969-1973, some scattered correspondence and an article on Standyne International Division. Katharine Houghton, Marion and Ellsworth's daughter, was an actress and this collection also contains a number of playbills from theaters where she was performing, 1973-1980.

Born in Wethersfield, Connecticut in 1917, Grant spent his entire life in the state except for four years at Harvard University. From 1940-1958 he worked for Allen Manufacturing Company in Hartford and then for Connecticut Manifold Forms Co., which later merged with Allied Paper Co.
